the cottage is a five minute walk away from the seafront coast and just a short drive to wonderful scenery and wildlife as well as the historic Otakou harbour.

The area is famous for conservation and wildlife - penguins, seals, sea lions, albatrosses, New Zealand native birds. Also it is a frequent haunt for its walks, surf beaches, fishing, star and night gazing and has been described by David Bellamy as “the best example of ecotourism in the world”.

Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle, is a short drive away.

Portobello Village (five minutes by car) has a historic pub that serves hearty meals, a cafe opened most days, a well stocked local store, the iconic 1908 Restaurant and Ric’s fish n’ chips for fresh seafood.
There is also an arts and crafts gallery, a laundrette and a small museum full of local history that is well worth a visit.
